Q. What is the Claflin University's Heritage Society?
A. The Claflin University's Heritage Society was established in 1990 to recognize individuals who have named Claflin in their estate plans. This includes commitments in the form of a bequest in a will or living trust, appreciated assets and/or in-kind gifts, life insurance policies, marketable securities, real property, and/or other forms of irrevocable gifts.
Q. Why are planned gifts important?
A. Planned gifts are a demonstration of the donor's faith in Claflin University's future and in the worth of its mission. Planned gifts are a critical component to its ability to fulfill its mission in years to come. These gifts fund critically-important aspects of college operations, such as much-needed scholarship support for our deserving students in addition to providing the resources necessary to enable the University to become a premier undergraduate teaching and research institution.
Q. What are some forms of planned gifts?
A. The following are examples of the most commonly utilized planned gifts at Claflin University:
- A gift to the University included in your will or living trust
- A gift of a life insurance policy or proceeds
- A gift of personal property (home, vacant lot or other real estate)
- A gift from an established trust
Gifts in any of the above forms may be made in memory of a loved one who is deceased or in honor of a living loved one. These types of gifts are a fantastic way to recognize a person's life and accomplishments.
Q. How may I become a member of the Heritage Society?
A. Membership is afforded to an individual who:
- chooses to remember Claflin University and invest in its mission through any one of more of the University's Planned Giving Programs including bequests, charitable trusts, gifts of life insurance or gifts of property.
- provides gift documentation to the Office of Planned Giving at Claflin University.

Q. How will I be recognized as a member of Claflin University's Heritage Society?
A. Every member of the Claflin's Heritage Society will receive a special plaque commemorating their commitment to Claflin University.
Also, a special luncheon honoring Heritage Society members is usually held annually. But most importantly, you can take comfort in recognizing that you have made the "ultimate investment" into the education of future generations at Claflin University.
